(Home) v Old Wulfs
Penn 310 (net) for
5 wickets. Old Wulfs 253 (net) for 5 wickets.
Under 11’s progress into the Finals of the Staffordshire Youth Cricket
League Cup…..
After convincingly beating Rugeley
CC in the Quarter Final, our Semi Final opponents were Old Wulfs CC.
Following Friday’s
torrent showers, the chance of the match going ahead at Mount Road looked
very bleak. However, after a break in the weather during the night and into
Saturday, play might just be possible.
After inspecting the ground early Saturday morning, some parts of the
outfield was slightly saturated with water, but drying up quickly. The
artificial pitch on which the game was being played was okay.
The Old Wulfs team turned up eager to play and after discussions it was
unanimously agreed to go ahead with the match.
Our captain Bhavesh Patel won the toss and had no hesitation in asking Old
Wulfs to bat first. Excellent bowling and fielding by Penn restricted Old
Wulfs to 197 (net) at the end of the first 8 overs with 4 wickets falling in
this period. The Old Wulfs third and fourth pair made a little fight of it
scoring 22 and 21 respectively during their allotted four overs. At the end
of their 20 overs, Old Wulfs finished on a respectable score of 253 (net)
for 5 wickets. Pick of the bowling was Luke Oakley who finished with figures
of 3 overs, 2 maidens, 2 wickets for 1 run. Other wicket takers taking a
wicket a piece were Dilesh Patel, Tom Wood and Bhavesh Patel.
Needing 254 to win, Penn made a poor start to their innings. The opening
pair, Arrun Bhogal and Rikesh Patel lost 2 wickets to finish on a net score
of 207 after their 4 overs. The second pair, Tom Wood and Luke Oakley had a
nightmare by their standards, loosing 3 wickets finishing on a net score of
204 after 8 overs. Then came the turning moment of the game; in came the
third pair Aaron Patel and Josh Heath. Josh was on fire, demolishing the Old
Wulfs attack, scoring 44 that included 3 sixes and 6 fours. The pair took
the net score to 265 at the end of the 12th over. Further runs
followed with the fourth pair Bhavesh Patel and Tom Merridith adding 26 to
the total taking the net score to 291 at the end of the 16th
over. With 4 overs remaining, the game was virtually won. The last pair
Dilesh Patel and Kieran Patel batted sensibly, combining defensive play,
quick singles and putting the odd bad ball away for 4 runs. The pair added a
further 19 runs to finish the innings on 310 (net) for 5 wickets, hence
winning the game by 57 runs. The Penn youngsters could not contain their joy
and celebrated well after the game had finished.
Both Jit and myself (Moss) were proud of this moment and the way the
youngsters fought back and represented their club …… Penn CC.
The Final is being played at Church Eaton on Sunday 15th July
starting at 2:00 pm. There is a possibility that our opponents may be our
local rivals, Wolverhampton. Therefore, Parents, Fellow Coaches and Members
of the club, we need your support on the day to drive and encourage our
youngsters.
