9th June - home v.
Willenhall
It was a case of a pair of cricket shoes providing the early
breakthrough for Penn. After an early success when veteran Paul Tranter
athletically caught the dangerous Campbell off the youthful bowling of
Sunhill Patel, Mange Bhandal [who had gone to change his shoes] was denied
his opportunity to bowl until he had been on the field for five overs so
allowing the silver fox Barrie Greatrex to continue with his run strangling
spell. Greatrex responded by dismissing three batsmen in four deliveries so
breaking the heart of the Willenhall batting.
Despite a fifth wicket stand of 70 [broken by Mitch Jefferies after an
opportune drinks break] Willenhall could only muster an inadequate 146 with
Greatrex finishing with 4-20 and wicket keeper turned bowler Richard
Grosvenor taking 3-24.
After tea Richard Grosvenor and
aging Brian Lester set about securing the win by racking up a chanceless
opening partnership of 145 before Grosvenor loosely drove to Riswan at
midoff for an imperious 63. Penn's 20 point 9 wicket victory was completed
by Lester driving through cover taking his total to 46no.
2nd June - away v. Old Wulfs
Captain Gary Slimm won the toss and elected to bowl on a fine sunny day. It
proved a wise decision as batting looked difficult on a variable wicket.
Penn bowlers relished the task and dismissed Old Wulfs for only 54.
Inevitably, there were some impressive bowling figures. Manj Bhandal took 3
for 14, Mark 'Blakey' Blakemore snatched 2 for 6 and Dave Potts 4 for 15.
The Penn reply was not without its alarms but the batsmen saw it through
comfortably in the end for the loss of four wickets. Kam Grewal top scored
with 13 while Manj Bhandal and Tom Bywater both finished on 12 not out.
