Sports
clubs score with new assurance standard
Eight
sports clubs are among the first in Wolverhampton to receive a new
quality assurance award. The Wolverhampton Sport Club Registration
Scheme is now available to all sports and physical activity clubs
and groups in Wolverhampton following a pilot trialled with local
groups earlier this year.
It
is aimed at clubs which have not secured Clubmark status, the
Sport England standard, either because the organisations don’t yet
have the resources to complete the application process or because
they offer sports which are not recognised by Sport England like
karate or dodgeball.
Amy
Baker, Wolverhampton City Council's Sports Development Officer,
said: “We respect the good work that many unaccredited clubs in
Wolverhampton do and feel that they ought to get recognition for
it. However we are aware that, for one reason or another, some
have been unable to apply for the Clubmark standard.
“As
a result, we have worked with our partners across the Black
Country to develop a registration scheme based on one which has
been successfully running in Walsall for the last few years.
“The Wolverhampton Sport Club Registration Scheme is designed to
be an acknowledgment of the commitment and quality of local clubs
and organisations offering physical activities, while at the same
time also improving the level of provision available.”
Already eight organisations – Wolverhampton and Tettenhall Ladies
Hockey Club, Sakura Karate Academy, Movin 'n' Groovin, Soccer
Coaching 2000, Penn Cricket Club, Old Wulfrunians Hockey Club, Old
Wulfrunians Tettenhall Cricket Club and Three Hammers Golf Club –
have been accredited by the scheme. A further 10 are working
towards the standard.
Clubs that achieve accreditation will be added to a list on the
Wolverhampton City Council website and will be able to use the
scheme logo on their promotional information. Only clubs that have
achieved the registration or Clubmark will be able to link with
Wolverhampton schools. Existing Clubmark clubs are also urged to
apply so that all accredited clubs can link with Wolverhampton
schools,
Amy
added: “Eventually we want to have a directory of quality assured
clubs who have either got a Clubmark award or have achieved
Wolverhampton Sport Club Registration, or both.”
Councillor Matt Holdcroft, Wolverhampton City Council’s Cabinet
Member for Leisure and Culture, said: “We hope that many of our
smaller or more specialist sports clubs and providers will be able
to now achieve recognition for the excellent work that they do.”
The
Wolverhampton Sport Club Registration Scheme is free and support
is available to help clubs to achieve the registration. For more
information, sports clubs and organisations can log on to
www.wolverhampton.gov.uk/clubregistration or call Amy Baker on
