Penn Oscar Nominations
Derrick Pickin and Adam Finney
have been nominated for Nat West Oscars and have been asked to attend
the Worcs v Warwickshire game when they will be presented with
their awards. Derrick Is nominated for long service to cricket with over
60 years involvement in the game being a founder of Tipton Cricket
Club in 1949 where he served in most capacities and later with Penn
where he has served as Groundsman and Assistant Groundsman .His greatest
claim to fame is batting endless overs at Fort Dunlop in the Mercian
League to save a game alongside fellow conspirator Paul Tranter where
between them they forced Dunlop to give up the ghost with half an hour
to play as the opposition players either had fallen asleep or become
frozen to the spot. Adam is nominated as a young volunteer for his
first team scoring, coaching, involvement with the under 9s tournaments
and his contributions to Nat West Cricket Force and Chance to Shine in
which he runs school coaching sessions, If they are successful in their
category they will go to Lords in October for an afternoon national
awards ceremony
The Club wish Derrick's wife
Lillian a speedy recovery after her triple bypass operation and heart
valve replacement/repair.The operation toook a mamouth nine hours she is
now out of intensive care
Dave and Aileen Dain (Gallery
Photo now available)
Penn Legend Dave "Top
End Mate" Dain and his wife Aileen will be leaving the area on
the 8th of May .Dave who will be retiring to Spain is an absolute Penn
Legend .Captaining the third team and starting a fourth team at Penn both
with the sole aim of bringing through the young talent at Penn who have
over the years at Penn themselves gone on and achieved success in their
own right
He has also extended the careers
of many ageing superstars Paul Tranter Mike Sleigh Barrie Greatrex and Bob
Dyke being four that immediately come to mind. There are of course many
many more.He led the return to the terraces when he encouraged the lapsed
Wolves fans amongst us to join him on The South Bank in the dark days of
the old Fourth division and took two coaches and a minibus of Penn Cricket
Club Wolves fans to the Sherpa Van final. Veteran of four Guernsey tours
and three Sidmouth tours. His philosophy was always "let the lads shine
through, be there to advise them, protect them when the going gets tough
,to win but not at all costs and to drink the fixture back after the game.
Aileen was social committee
chair for many years and the money raised from the social events helped
make the club what it is today More importantly it ensured whichever team
you played for we all socialised together often getting home just in time
to get up and play the next game.Evenings with the Preserves Rod Vaughan,
Stuart Price ,Steve Tranter jnr Robin Evans, Michael Bates and MC Rob
Pearce were unbelievable as were the Ian "Ike" Corns raffle with the
fantastic prizes of the cake stand <a shutter locking plate>and a coat
hanger which were highly sought after.
The Club will sorely miss two of
its greatest supporters and friends and we will be poorer for their not
being around. We wish them well in their future and to inform them they
will always be welcome.
The club has asked Dave to join
us on Friday evening 1st May at 6.30 before youth training for a short
farewell please ensure that past and present players and supporters come
along to say goodbye and share a few memories.
Worcestershire U15’s Girls
Indoor Championship 2009 – 29th March 2009
Following the England Women’s team making history winning
the World Cup the Penn U15’s Girls team made history of their own. In an
historic day Penn U15’s Girls Cricket Team participated in its very first
Girls competitive tournament. Staged at Worcester Grammar School the
tournament, played to Lady Taverners rules, was contested by Old
Elizabethans, Astwood Bank and Penn U15 Girl’s teams.
In our first game, Amelia Smith won the toss and chose to
Field. With exceptional bowling from all of the team, highlights being 2
wickets from Alex Nicklin and a superb Hat trick from Rachael Smith, we
restricted Old Elizabethans to of score of 19-5 (net 4). Humera, Alex and
Rachael then batted sensibly to take the victory – the First in Penn’s Girls
History!
In our next game against Astwood Bank Amelia lost the
toss and we were asked to field. Astwood Bank showed their intent from the
off and quickly ran several quick singles, but our solid bowling and
fielding, including a fantastic reaction catch from Alex Nicklin, matched
their intent and after their 8 overs Astwood Bank were 54-1 (51 net). Emily
Harris saw off the first over from Astwood’s strike bowler with a solid
straight bat, and with Amelia at the other end they set about the task in
hand, 12 from the second over put us back on course. Emily lost her wicket
in the 3rd over which bought Rachael to the crease and with
Amelia ran quick singles, scoring from walls and corners, to take us to 26
after 5 overs.
An eventful 6th over saw Amelia retire having
reached 20 and Rachael scoring the only 6 of the tournament which kept us on
par, 37 from 6 overs, Rowanne joined Rachael and in a nail biting 7th
over the score progressed to 44.
8 runs to win – 1 over
Dot, 3,3,1 - scores tied. Dot.
Last ball – Rachael and Rowanne scampered the single to
clinch the match – what a finish!! The Girls won and became the
Worcestershire U15’s Girls Indoor Champions
2009
Let the party commence!!
Well done to all the team - Alex Nicklin, Rachael Smith,
Humera Sajid, Emily Harris, Rowanne Adams, Claudia Chatter, Charlotte
Sylvester, Amelia Smith as everyone’s excellent contribution resulted in the
team victory
Woman of the Match – Rachael Smith for contributions in
both games. See picture in the
