Second XI
Fixtures
Table (Birmingham League site, 2nd Div. 2nd XI)

19th May - v. Pelsall
After rain for most of the week another abandoned match looked on the cards!
However, a dry Friday and lots of hard work from groundsman Derek Pickin
resulted in the first 2nd XI home game of the season taking place.
Pelsall won the toss and elected to bowl on what looked a very green and
tricky wicket. The Penn batting line up came together and showed great
patience early on building a solid foundation which was capitalised on later
as the team hammered its way to 216 for 7 off 50 overs. (J. Grosvenor 44 not
out, S. Price 39, O. Wright 34)
Once again it was a match where the quality of the Penn bowling attack shone
as the Pelsall team struggled to cope with the pace of Junior and the
movement of the ball by Chopper and Hiren. From early on in the innings
Pelsall looked set to bat out making no attempt to chase down the Penn
total. The efforts in the field were excellent and the only disappointment
was that the team could not eek out the last three wickets.
A top class performance all round which if maintained all year will surely
give us a shout of league honours!
Winning draw - 14 points - 9th

12th May - home v. Wellington
Following days of rain there was no chance of play at Mount Road.
Abandoned - 5 points - 9th

5th May - away v. Smethwick
Having been reduced to 10 men late on the team made a decent effort at
restricting Smethwick. The bowling was superb, at times unplayable, but
after an early burst, which reduced the home side to 30 for 4, Smethwick's
cavalier approach paid off as they hit their way to 209 all out.
In response Penn showed a lack of patience and were crippled by a few
questionable decisions from the umpire as the team held on to finish on 147
for 8. It was only the hard work and effort of Chopper and Hiren (batting
out 16 overs) that prevented defeat.
A disappointing start but many positives to be taken out of the game.
Losing draw - 7 points - 8th
