2nd August v. Pelsall (home)
Skipper Ghazi Zaki lost the toss and Penn were put into bat. A tricky
wicket, some accurate bowling and some fairly indifferent batting
contributed to Penn being dismissed for a paltry 67 with only Bully Patel
and Pritpal Grewal reaching double figures. George Nock stuck around for a
relatively credible 8.
In response, Pelsall lost only one wicket in reaching the total. A very bad
day at the office.
24th May v. Highcroft &
Great Barr Unity (home)
A sunny but blustery day greeted the players at Gamesfield Green.
Skipper Steve Tranter lost the toss (again) and Penn were put in (again).
The batsmen did Penn proud. A typically robust 55 from Steve Tranter and a
dashing 75 from Harnake Sanghera saw Penn reach 204 in their allotted 50
overs. Glyn Martin chipped in with 38. The key to the innings was the
partnerships forged by those three. An 86 partnership between Sanghera and
Tranter, and a 100 between Sanghera and Martin.
Penn roared at the start of Highcroft's innings with Chris Asbury and James
Thomas both taking a wicket in their first overs. Highcroft were staggering
at 12 for 3 once Thomas struck again. However, Highcroft were made of stern
stuff and their Captain Tozer struck a brutal 85 in fairly quick time.
Highcroft reached 112 in 30 overs and looked in good shape. Fortunately for
Penn, wickets began to tumble at fairly regular intervals once the skipper
was removed by Thomas. 'Spinderella' Glyn Martin cast his revolving spell
once again and snatched 3 for 49. Young James Thomas ended with 5 for 34 and
bowled pretty swiftly with great character. He looks a fantastic prospect.
Eventually, Highcroft were dismissed for 175 and Penn claimed the 25 points.
17th May v. Pelsall (away)
A thoroughly cold and miserable day with drizzle hanging around for most
of it meant a fair amount of to-ing and fro-ing between the playing area and
the pavilion. Skipper Steve Tranter lost the toss and Penn were invited to
bat. It was a late start and frequent rain interruptions meant it was
difficult to get going. The innings got reduced to 34 overs and Steve
himself top scored with 32 as Penn were dismissed for 92.
The medium pacers of Penn started the reply but in truth never troubled the
batsmen on an excellent wicket in the circumstances. It was only when spin
king Glyn Martin came on that wickets started to tumble. Glyn bagged 4 for
27 and there was a stunning run out by Sunil which claimed a bowling point
for Penn, but the first innings total was never enough as Pelsall cruised to
victory in 21 overs.
10th May - v. Wednesbury
(home)
Penn were invited to field first on a hot day and Chris Asbury partnering
Eddie Slimm got us underway with the bowling. A decent opening spell brought
no reward for the unlucky pair. David 'Out of Retirement' Potts came on
first change and bagged a couple of wickets and Glyn Martin did the same. A
number of chances in the field went untaken and Wednesbury finished on 212
for 6.
A dogged response from Penn meant they saw out a losing draw. Dev Penn
deserves particular mention for his determined 23 off 29 overs. Tim Smith
finally faced the nightmare scenario of going in to bat to survive one ball
at 112 for 9 when losing his wicket would have meant losing the match. Tim
stood strong and saw us through.
26th April - Penn 127
all out 49.5 overs lost to Milford Hall 128-4 42.4 overs
Once again Penn lost the toss. The dreaded £2 coin!!! We were put in to bat
and started off very slowly but did not lose many wickets. Ghazi Zaki stuck
with it on a tough wicket to bat, tight bowling did not help but he batted
43 overs for 29, a good effort. The idea was to bat around him. Simon Eaton
(13) fought well for 23 overs but the runs weren't coming too fluently. In
steps S.Turner and blasts a lovely 25 runs in no time and at this point we
were stepping up the pace. As he fell this brought to the wicket D.Gibson
(37) who played some sublime shots all around the ground and guided us past
100 off 45 overs, ending up on 127 was a valiant effort against a team that
has won the league the past 3 years.
With something to bowl at, J.Rudge (3-46) and D.Gibson (1-28)
got us off to a good start and we took wickets at regular intervals. R.Ball
(0-24) and A.Bhogal (0-18) put up some resistance and kept the runs down and
T.Howard bowled a nice line towards the end and looks to be a good prospect.
Unfortunately no points to bring back but we fought well against a very good
team. Well done boys
19th April - Penn 3rd XI
257-9 dec. Tettenhall Wergs College 75 all out
A bad start from the skipper losing the toss, and Penn were put into bat so
maximum points were at stake. A 1:30pm start at Mount Road saw the Penn
openers get a great start getting 65 and 61respectively . This gave us a good solid start to the innings.
Unfortunately not all of the team took advantage of time in the middle but
Lee Homer survived an early L.B.W shout and went on to get 50. As we passed
the 240 mark, a young promising player came to the crease and played three
beautiful shots each reaching the boundary. Richard Kimberlin looks like a
promising star and this year will shine. This was just the start of a good
all round display for the youngster. Penn declared on 257-9 off 42.3 overs
which gave us 57 overs to bowl a young Tettenhall Wergs College team. Bhogal and Richard Kimberlin
came later
to the bowling attack and both got 3 wickets for hardly any (Bhogal 3-6 and
Kimberlin 3-7). Kimberlin topping off a superb performance on possibly the
coldest day of the year, all out for 75 for the full 25 points.
